In exactly 100 days a fireworks display over Lake Wakatipu will officially open the 39th Queenstown Winter Festival, which will include street parties, concerts, comedy, family fun and on-mountain action.

Festival manager Lisa Buckingham said she was delighted to announce the return of some festival favourites - including the Birdman competition, Dog Derby and Thriller in the Chiller - with several new events expected to be announced soon.

''Winter Festival is a celebration of our unique culture and community, our mountain environment, and a declaration that winter is here,'' Ms Buckingham said.

''As always, we've worked to make sure we're delivering an event that is relevant and appealing to locals and visitors alike.''

The 2013 festival will open on June 21 with the traditional opening party at Earnslaw Park and a fireworks display at 7pm.

Other downtown events during the week include the Family Fun Day, Festival Parade and Day on the Bay, while on-mountain favourites at Coronet Peak include Mountain Bikes on Snow and the Suitcase Race.

The Winter Wonderland Ice Rink on the Village Green will once again provide a magical downtown hub, public skating sessions being held throughout the festival. The festival finishes on June 30.
