Kingsview School pupils Mackenzie Shewan (10) and Nika Sesia (12) report what it was like to sing Slice of Heaven alongside Dave Dobbyn and choirs from all Wakatipu primary schools on the opening night of the Queenstown Winter Festival.

Da da da, boom boom, da da da, boom boom, da da da, boom boom, da da da da, dum . . . the sound is still ringing in our ears as we reflect on our wonderful experience of singing on stage with the Kiwi musician Dave Dobbyn.

Take a funny guy with a great sense of humour and add 20 kids from different schools and what does that make?

A wonderful experience.

About three weeks before our performance at the Winter Festival opening party, we had to audition at our school and we got in! After three nervous and question-filled practices, at one of which it started snowing, and a sound check with a One News reporter, it was time.

Kitted out in our matching beanies and shirts, butterflies in our tummies, we filed on to the stage with microphones in our hands and we sang our hearts (and butterflies) out.

The crowd, which we loved performing for, erupted into cheers and we let out a sigh. It seemed like we had been holding it in for weeks.

Our main music teacher hustled us backstage and we rushed to see the beautiful fireworks that exploded into the sky as the next act got ready to preform.

The night will stay in our memory forever as well as the two seconds of fame that we got. . . . Her love shines over my horizon, she's a slice of heaven.
