A steady stream of members of the public took the chance
yesterday to find out more about the Queenstown Lakes
District Council's proposed Wanaka lakefront reserves
The ''drop-in'' session was run by Wanaka Community Board
chairwoman Rachel Brown and council parks manager Mike
One of those attending was Wanaka Watersports Facility Trust
chairman Michael Sidey, who wants the plan to allow a 420sq m
watersports facility to be built on the edge of Roys Bay.
The trust, which is garnering support for the building from
high-profile athletes and administers, provided the Otago
Daily Times with emails from Olympic gold medallist
Hamish Bond and others.
Mr Bond described the lake as a ''phenomenal recreational
resource'' and said ''an appropriate support facility will
only amplify the potential benefits to the community''.
New Zealand Olympic committee president Mike Stanley wrote
the facility would become a ''highly valued'' community
asset. And Southern Lakes Multisport Club president Dougal
Allan expected the facility would encourage growth in
Public submissions on the plan close on June 6.
