Man killed in Wanaka accident named

Police have released the name of the man who was struck and killed by a car in Wanaka overnight.

He was Coen van Rosmalen (24), a Dutch national who was residing in Wanaka.

Police have not ruled out that Mr van Rosmalen was lying in the road when he was hit, where Beacon Point Rd intersects Eely Point Rd, about 3.20am..

An ambulance was called at 3.27am and staff requested a rescue helicopter, but Mr van Rosmalen died before the helicopter could arrive.

Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said police serious crash unit and coronial investigations were ongoing.

Initial reports Mr van Rosmalen was lying in the road would form part of the inquiry.

"It's very early days, we're trying to cover all the bases at this stage."

The body was taken to Wanaka Medical Centre.

A St John ambulance spokeswoman said it was unknown if emergency services were phoned by the driver of the car which struck the man.

The driver was not injured in the incident.

The Netherlands' honorary consul in Christchurch was the first point of contact for police, and the Netherlands Embassy in Wellington has offered unreserved help to police.

Deputy head of mission Stefan Hulisz said from Wellington the investigation "will probably be concluded without the help of the embassy".

"It goes without saying we're shocked and doing everything possible to contact the family."

Mr Hulisz praised New Zealand police as "extremely professional".
