The Wanaka community is engaged with the gigatown competition and ready to go when the town wins the contest, Gigatown Wanaka member Arna Craig says.

The Gigatown Wanaka representatives who visited Chattanooga had returned full of knowledge and ideas on how Wanaka could win the 1GB internet competition.

Ms Craig and Kelly Good spent four days in Chattanooga, along with representatives of other gigatown finalists, learning how the American city turned itself around thanks to the gigabit speed internet access.

Once a city in economic decline, Chattanooga was now regenerated and thriving, thanks to a technology boom brought about by the fastest internet speed available, Ms Craig said.

''It's good to know we are on the right track of our plan for `gig success'.

''Now it's about refining that with the knowledge we have gained on our trip.''

The top aspect Gigatown Wanaka brought back was the importance of community collaboration - from private businesses to public enterprise.

Private businesses were working together instead of being in competition with each other and everyone benefited, she said.

''Chattanooga had 'The Gig' installed in 2009 and the transformation is incredible. Wanaka is not that far behind.

"We don't have those initial problems Chattanooga faced. We also have an engaged community ready to go when we win the competition.''

The Gigatown Wanaka committee was thrilled with the support of businesses and individuals who had been active in the social media component of the finals, Ms Craig said.
