Best man pepper-sprayed at stag party

A best man at a stag party had to be pepper sprayed after becoming enraged that two women he hired as strippers pole-danced instead.

Jeremy David Garden (25), mechanic, formerly of Alexandra but now living in Perth, appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips at the Queenstown District Court.

He was charged with resisting a policeman and intentionally damaging a glass at the Lake Hawea Hotel on November 8.

Garden was convicted and fined $600, court costs $130 and reparation of $3.60 for the broken glass.

Prosecuting Sergeant Ian Collin said Garden engaged the services of two women on the Kiwi Strippers website.

The women arrived at the hotel about 7pm, with Garden paying their male minder for their services. However, he became angry and aggressive when told the act consisted of pole dancing, not stripping, and grabbed back the money.

When the women and the minder "retreated'' to their vehicle, Garden became more enraged, and threw a beer schooner at the car.

Police arrived and Garden was handcuffed and put in the back of a patrol car. After being warned for kicking the seat in front of him, he continued and was pepper sprayed.

Judge Phillips said Garden had been extremely intoxicated during the incident.
