He is a fifth-generation member of the United States Rockefeller family that made its original fortune in oil.
Hosted by Sir Eion Edgar (left), he was also joined by Australian businessman Allan English (right).
Mr Rockefeller would not comment on business matters but described Queenstown as stunningly beautiful.
This is his first trip to New Zealand and he said he wanted to come back.
Sir Eion said that while Mr Rockefeller and Mr English came from very different backgrounds, he was looking forward to hearing their stories of philanthropy.
