A $298 million contract was signed this week for four public-private partnership schools, including the new Wakatipu High School, due to open in February 2018.

Other schools under the PPP with building consortium Future Schools Partners are in Auckland and Christchurch.

Under a PPP the private partner is responsible for designing, financing, building and maintaining the school property, which would have significant benefits for schools and ratepayers, Education Minister Hekia Parata said.

''The public-private procurement model is an innovative and proven way to spend taxpayer money efficiently.

''It also benefits teachers and staff, who can spend more time raising student achievement while the private partner looks after the buildings.''

The facility to be built on a 7ha site at Remarkables Park, Frankton will replace the school at Gorge Rd. It will cater for pupils from years 9 to 13 and will have capacity for 1200.

Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye said the contract signing gave certainty to schools and communities that building work could start.
