$10.9m show

The Wanaka A&P show in March generated almost $10.9 million of direct economic benefits to the town, according to a report prepared by Opinions Market Research Ltd.

It estimated the total expenditure by trade exhibitors, volunteers, spectators and competitors over the two-day event in March was $10,864,638.

The first study to gauge the show's economic impact showed ''non-locals'' contributed 75% of the spending and their average stay in Wanaka was 2.6 nights.

Attendance at the show was a record 35,000 people, making it the biggest in the event's 78-year history. The show is run by a not-for-profit society.
