Glenorchy athlete Nick Neynens will tomorrow become the first New Zealander to take part in a race across the Alps in Europe.

Those competing in the X-Alps cross the Alps by foot or paraglider, a straight-line distance of 1038km.

Neynens said he was getting on with preparation and not wasting too much energy getting emotional.

The last few days had been spent on logistics and finalising techniques.

Having spent time on the route and studied maps, he was confident he had memorised all the main features on the way.

''During the last month I've made plenty of mistakes but it's been a good learning experience to take the extra risks - like pushing on low instead of getting maximum lift from thermals. I'll have to make sure I stay in the air during the race; that's crucial.''

He is being supported by Louis Tapper, of Queenstown.

No outside assistance is allowed and Mr Tapper can only help with logistics, food and medical support.

As a seasoned flier himself, Neynens said this helped with the planning phase.

''He has dedicated a lot of time getting everything organised so I can concentrate on flying.''

X-Alps starts in Salzburg tomorrow and the race will take the pair through Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and France, before finishing on a landing float in the sea in Monaco.
