The team from Queenstown's new Countdown store plants native trees at Lake Hayes on Saturday.

About 230 natives from the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust were planted.

Twelve Countdown staff helped out.

Mr Tasker said the new supermarket, at the Five Mile site at Frankton, was set to open on October 22.

''There's lots to do - there always is in the lead-up to the opening, it gets pretty frantic.''

Nearly 100 staff had been employed, including quite a few local people.

Mr Tasker came to Queenstown two years ago from Auckland - and has managed stores in Dunedin and Invercargill leading up to the store's opening.

''It's going to be beautiful - it really is world class,'' he said.

At 3000sq m, the Queenstown store is bigger than the South Dunedin Countdown which opened in 2012.
