Safe water plan endorsed

The Wanaka Community Board has endorsed a Queenstown Lakes District Council water safety plan for Wanaka Airport's water supply.

The plan, prepared by environmental health officer Melanie Heather, is to go to Public Health South.

Ms Heather, in her report to a recent board meeting, said the airport supply had no treatment plant ''and therefore the supply does not provide sufficient barriers to contamination''.

Each element of the airport's water supply was exposed to risk events ''of varying likelihood and consequence'', she said.

The safety plan identified ''extreme'' and ''high priority'' risks, such as not having enough water available; source water receiving septic tank discharges; source water in contact with mineral deposits; and contamination of the trunk mains, or into the distribution system.

The plan also included preventive measures.

Ms Heather noted the water scheme was commissioned in 1995, with ''raw water'' taken from a bore in the hangar area, and pumped into a 25,000-litre concrete tank.

The system supplied about 12 hangars, the airport office building a cafe and irrigation network.

Wastewater was disposed of via about eight septic tanks, one 20m from the bore.
