Hazel (10, left) and Chloe Murray (8), of Wanaka, say they don't know how their backyard apple tree came to grow such "huge'' apples.

The sisters were among about 150 people who participated in Wanaka's fourth annual Great Autumn Apple Drive at Rippon Hall yesterday.

Food Wanaka committee member Gina Dempster said the event was about raising awareness around food waste and self-sufficiency.

"This time of the year we are so lucky to have so many beautiful fruit trees, but often you just see it falling on the ground because even one apple tree is more apples than one family can ever eat.''

Ms Dempster was unsure how many kilos had been given this year, but last year nearly 1200kg of apples were turned into chutney, juice, cider and sauces.
