It has been almost seven and a-half years since Matthew Alexander Hamill went missing from Queenstown and police are still looking for information.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 29, 2008, Mr Hamill was seen in the Frankton area.

The next morning his Mitsubishi Diamante sedan, registration BTF577, was found unlocked at the Roaring Meg power station lookout, on State Highway 8 between Queenstown and Cromwell.

In December 2009 the Otago Daily Times reported there was a note inside the vehicle indicating he was going to take his own life.

An extensive land and river search was carried out and some of his belongings were located near the vehicle, down a steep bank leading to the Kawarau River. Mr Hamill's body has not been found. There had been no bank account activity.

In a statement yesterday Detective Matt Jones, of Queenstown, called for anyone with information about Mr Hamill's disappearance, or anyone who may have seen him after October 30, 2008 to contact police.

‘‘Inquiries undertaken revealed Mr Hamill appeared to travel on a regular basis to Oamaru,'' Det Jones said.

‘‘He also has ties in Auckland and overseas, in Vietnam.

‘‘The photograph of Mr Hamill was taken in the period leading up to when he went missing. If [he] is still alive he would now be aged 65 years.''

Mr Hamill, food and beverage purchase manager at Millbrook Resort at the time of his disappearance, was born in Northern Ireland and had a tattoo of a black and green turtle on his right shoulder.

He was last seen wearing a yellow jacket, sunglasses, dark brown trousers, a cream-coloured jumper and black shoes.
