Jeremy Sabia (left) and Thebault Bussiere are two French seasonal workers struggling to find winter accommodation in Wanaka.

They and two others are camped in tents and cars at the Albert Town Camp Ground and beginning to feel the effects of winter.

Mr Bussiere said they had looked at four or five rental houses in Wanaka in the past six weeks but had been turned down as tenants.

They surmise that in each case families were preferred over backpackers.

Mr Bussiere said they were also beginning to wonder if their nationality counted against them - the French were sometimes considered "dirty'' and "grumpy'', he said.

They assured the Otago Daily Times this was not so in their case.

Mr Bussiere said they had now lowered their sights a little and instead of trying to rent a house, were simply after a room or two in a house in the meantime.
