Airport numbers continue forward march

More than 1.5 million passengers moved through Queenstown Airport in the 12 months to March, the airport's latest statistics show.

The monthly passenger update said there had been a year-on-year increase of 16.2% for total passenger numbers, to 1,587,587, which was attributed to an increase in airline capacity and continued demand on all domestic and transtasman routes.

Domestic volumes for the month rose 21.3%, to a record 118,553.

That was largely due to the Easter holidays coinciding with popular events, including the Warbirds over Wanaka International Airshow, the Motatapu events and the 2016 New Zealand Golf Open.

The double-digit growth trend in international passenger numbers continued, with a 15.4% lift for March due to strong loadings and continued increase in transtasman airline capacity.

Overall passenger numbers were up 20% compared to March 2015 to 156,673.
