Two vehicles spun at the notorious Devil's Staircase on State Highway 6 near Queenstown within 10 minutes of each other yesterday.

The first, a Toyota van belonging to Dunedin removals firm New Zealand Van Lines, left the road while heading south towards Kingston about 4.10pm.

It crossed the centre line and plunged about five metres down the bank towards the lake.

The male driver and passenger sustained only minor injuries.

New Zealand Van Lines Dunedin branch manager Brendan McLeod said: "It was one of ours. The two employees who were in it are OK. I can't comment further.''

Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Bisset, of Queenstown said charges were being  considered.

The second crash, at 4.20pm, involved a 28-year-old German tourist. He was not hurt.

Constable Dave Leach, of Lumsden, attended the scene and said it appeared the driver had lost control on the bend while heading towards Queenstown.

The German's rental car crashed into the rock wall on the southbound lane, about 4km from Kingston. He was given an infringement notice.

"It's a bloody wet road today,'' Constable Leach said.

The accidents bring the total for the week to three at the same location.

An American couple emerged unscathed after their rental car plunged down the bank at 6.15pm on Monday.
