A senior Chinese Government minister was in Queenstown yesterday to launch a photo and book exhibition, Beautiful China.

The people at the function were senior representative of the Chinese Politburo and Minister of the Publicity Department Liu Qibao, Queenstown Lakes Mayor Vanessa van Uden and the director-general, International Affairs Bureau of State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China, Zhang Fuhai.

The 70 photos in the exhibition focus on four perspectives: natural endowments, unity of man and nature, world heritage in China, and intangible cultural heritages.

Ms van Uden welcomed the minister to the resort and attended the exhibition at the Queenstown Memorial Centre.

"It was wonderful to welcome such important visitors to Queenstown and we are very lucky to have the exhibition here at the Memorial Centre. It is a great opportunity to learn about China and its culture,'' she said.

A large police and diplomatic protection squad presence was evident.

Mr Qibao met Prime Minister John Key earlier this week during his visit to New Zealand.
