Queenstown businessman Jim Boult is to run for the Queenstown-Lakes district mayoralty.

At this stage he will be joined by deputy mayor Lyal Cocks, of Wanaka, and Glenorchy's Al Angus in the October mayoral race, when Vanessa van Uden steps down.

Mr Boult, a former owner of Shotover Jet and ex-Christchurch Airport chief executive, started his campaign yesterday, with a shot across the bows of the Government over a potential bed tax for Queenstown.

"I wouldn't say that I have a fixed view on how we should fund ongoing infrastructure but I don't believe it's acceptable to continue to do it from our rates base and I believe that we should look at an alternative model.

"Like other tourism towns, we face the perennial problem of needing to fund an infrastructure greater than our ratepayers would normally require us [to], so we need to find an alternative.''Mr Boult (64) said he was standing because he felt an obligation to give something back.

"I've been in town 34 years, it's treated my wife and me very well. We've had the great fortune to have two fabulous kids grow up here and do really well at school.''

A director or chairman of many companies and organisations, Mr Boult says he will probably quit some roles if he becomes mayor, not because of any conflicts of interest, but for workload reasons.
