Even concussion could not stop Steve Gurney making his ice-skating debut.
The Queenstown multisporter (52) hit the ice hard while training last week and spent the night in hospital.
He admits his confidence took a hit too, but he "got back on the horse''.
Mr Gurney was one of 16 people who dazzled at the Winter Festival's Winter Wonderland ice rink yesterday afternoon in a charity competition that teams local celebrities, most with little experience, with expert skaters.
Pairs have been practising for the ice-skating competition for six weeks.
This year, themes included James Bond, Batman, Dirty Dancing and Grease. Obvious signs of nerves were kept at bay as the stars performed to a crowd for the first time.
There were a few dropped hats, slip-ups and concentrating faces as spectators lined the rink in anticipation.
Mr Gurney said he and partner Alana Standish, also from Queenstown, made mistakes; it was a matter of how well they were covered up.
Tonight, the pressure comes on as they perform for judges.
The final show starts at 6pm.
