Staff and management at Treble Cone had a reason to celebrate yesterday as they opened up their beginners' area to the public - just in time for the school holidays.
Treble Cone sales and marketing general manager Sophie Luther said the field had had no snow over the past couple of days so the beginners' area comprised largely man-made snow.
At 10.30am yesterday there were about 20 people out on the snow, but because the opening of the beginners' area was announced late on Thursday, they were expecting a fairly quiet day, she said.
Staff numbers yesterday were limited as management did not know what to expect in terms of skier numbers.
Treble Cone ski area chief executive Jackie van der Voort said it was early days, but they were excited to be operating.
Snow machines were still blasting out snow yesterday, both on the upper mountain and at base level.
To open the upper slopes for the holidays, Miss Luther said they ideally needed "a nice dump of snow'' or a few cold days for snow-making, which were forecast.
