Kayakers' actions 'stupidity'

"Just another case of absolute stupidity" was how Queenstown Lakes District Council harbourmaster Marty Black described the actions of two Queenstown men who got into trouble while kayaking on Lake Wakatipu yesterday morning.

Mr Black said a 26-year-old Queenstown man and a colleague set out from One Mile before 8am, intending to paddle to Cecil Peak.

About 400m off shore, the 26-year-old dislocated his shoulder, tipped out of his kayak and could not get back in.

The most disappointing thing was neither of the men was wearing life jackets, Mr Black said.

"This is just another case of absolute stupidity."

A Dart River jet-boat driver who saw the man in the water notified Queenstown police, who called on a Kawarau Jet boat, which was in the area.

"Kawarau Jet was . . . able to get to the man very quickly," he said. "He was well on the way to hypothermia."
