Hoping for success second time around

Mathematical probability suggests if you do not at first succeed, your chances of success are greater the second time.

That is the hope of Columba College pupil Chiao Lin.

The 16-year-old is hoping to be selected to represent New Zealand at the International Mathematics Olympiad in the Netherlands next year.

For the second consecutive year, Chiao has been selected as one of 24 secondary school pupils for a training camp at Rangi Ruru Girls' School in Christchurch in January.

She is the younger sister of Columba College pupil Yin Lin who was in yesterday's ODT after achieving success in her fourth national writing competition this year.

Last year, Chiao was selected for the 2010 IMO training camp and was one of 13 pupils who went on to be selected for the 2010 New Zealand training squad.

From there, six are selected to represent New Zealand at the International Mathematics Olympiad.

Unfortunately, Chiao did not make the cut for the 2010 team, but hopes next year will be different.

"Obviously, this time, I hope to go one step further. It's a very competitive selection process and it's very difficult to get into the team. But this time, I know better what it will take to get there."

During the camp, Chiao would attend mathematics lectures and problem-solving sessions.

If she is selected again for the training squad, she will complete assignments via correspondence in a bid to be selected for the team to represent New Zealand.

"The olympiad is the intellectual olympics, and it's the pinnacle for young mathematicians."
