Kavanagh College won the Denis Slowley Trophy at the inaugural co-educational secondary school sports held in Dunedin yesterday.

The idea of the annual sports day was the brainchild of Slowley, who retires from Bayfield High School this year after 12 years as principal, and teacher Mike Beagley, who developed the idea during a staffroom discussion earlier this year.

Kavanagh College won the contest with 41.5 points from Bayfield High School (36.5).

The other competing schools were Logan Park, Taieri College and Kaikorai Valley College.

Each school entered 11 teams, and 750 pupils contested the five sports - rugby, football, netball, basketball and hockey.

Kavanagh won the boys hockey and the deciding sport was the girls basketball final at the Edgar Centre in which Kavanagh beat Bayfield 30-28.

Taieri College beat Bayfield in the round-robin rugby with Jake Steffani the standout player for Taieri and Levi Baker for Bayfield.

The girls football was won by Taieri and the girls hockey by Logan Park.
