Fine second for St Hilda's First XI

The first XI hockey team was a fine second at the elite Federation Cup in Dunedin, losing 1-0 to Wairarapa College in the final, while the second XI finished ninth at the Jenny McDonald tournament in Ashburton.

The senior A netball team won the A grade plate at the South Island tournament in Invercargill, and the first XI football team was 11th at a tournament in Taupo.

In Dunedin, the junior A basketball team won the South Island junior tournament, beating Waimea in the final. The senior A team was fifth at the AA secondary schools South Island tournament in Nelson to ensure entry into the national tournament in Palmerston North.

Swimmer Cecilia Crooks won two gold medals (13 years 400m freestyle and 400m individual medley), two silver medals (200m freestyle and 200m individual medley) and a bronze medal (100m freestyle) at the New Zealand secondary schools championships last week. She then competed at the New Zealand short-course meeting, winning a silver medal in the 800m freestyle and bronze in the 400m individual medley. Aleisha Ruske claimed gold medals in the 17-18 years 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly and a bronze medal in the 100m individual medley.

 

Dunstan High School

The ice hockey team combined with Mt Aspiring College for the South Island secondary schools tournament in Dunedin, winning the final of its grade 10-2.

After two close losses in tournament week, the girls football team finished the tournament with a win.

The under-15 rugby team made the semifinals of the tournament in Queenstown where it was beaten by Darfield.

The Dunstan boys hockey team finished 13th at its tournament in Blenheim, while the senior A netball team was 25th in A grade at the South Island tournament in Invercargill.

The boys A basketball team finished fourth in Dunedin to qualify for the national tournament.

 

Kaikorai Valley College

Mariza Antonopolou (year 9) and Sarah Ramsay (year 10) represented Otago under-15 at the national table tennis championships in Palmerston North. Both girls found the going tough against more experienced players. Mariza, in the individual singles, had a match point against a highly-rated Auckland opponent before losing in the deciding set. Mariza also attended the South Island championships in Invercargill on August 23-24, where she took sets off the national under-13 champion and also another highly-rated Canterbury player.

The KVC boys first XI was a deserving winner of the reserve grade final. It qualified top with only one loss along the way.

At the Otago secondary schools smallbore shooting competition, Tarnisha Harrison was named top girl shooter and Shaun Simpson claimed the overall and top shooter prize. The KVC team, which also included Kyle Rutherford, Nastassija Harrison, Ryan Seatter and Tim Phanphattarapong, was third overall.

The senior A netball team performed well at the South Island tournament in Invercargill. It finished nine places higher than last year, and was the best of the Dunedin teams in B grade.

 

John McGlashan College

Courtland Ellis picked up six gold medals, a silver and two bronzes at the New Zealand short-course swimming championships in Wellington. Cameron Moran had a fourth in the long-course competition.

The first XV finished third, its highest placing, in the Highlanders competition after beating King's in the playoff.

The first XI hockey side may be slightly disappointed with its third at tournament week after winning the Otago schools competition. It beat King's in a tense final that went down to penalty shots.

The footballers placed second at their tournament in Timaru, as did the under-15 rugby side in Queenstown, while the curlers were third at the South Island tournament. The junior football side beat Otago Boys' 4-3 in the final of the schools competition.

Louis Jennings won a silver medal in the foil at the South Island secondary schools fencing competition and Connor Foley-Walker picked up a bronze. At the national event, Louis came third in the epee.

In cross-country, Oli Chignell placed eighth at the national club competition.

 

King's High School

The ice hockey team won the South Island tournament for the first time after beating Wakatipu 4-2 in the final. Year 13 pupil Joe Orr was the top points-scorer in A grade and Hunter Waugh the top goalie.

At the South Island senior basketball tournament in Nelson, King's finished fifth to qualify for the national tournament for the first time in 10 years. Wins were recorded over Timaru Boys', Cashmere and St Andrew's.

Also in Nelson, the First XI football team finished third of 16 teams at the Trident tournament, losing a semifinal to Marlborough Boys', 2 -1.

Year 10 pupil Pat Flannagan won the intermediate section of the Otago secondary schools duathlon, and Zinzan Smith (run) paired with Kees Duyvesteyn (cycle) to win the senior team section.

 

Taieri College

The school had several teams at winter tournament week: senior A netball in Invercargill, first XI boys football in Timaru, and first XI girls football in Dunedin. All teams performed very well.

Tanisha Keach won a bronze in the 50m freestyle and silver in the 200m individual medley at the New Zealand secondary schools swimming championships in Wellington.

The year 10 boys basketball team went on a tour of Central Otago and had games against Maniototo, Dunstan, Wakatipu and Cromwell, finishing with two wins and two losses.

The following Taieri College rugby players made Otago representative teams: Cameron Dyer, Cameron Alan McNeil, Bailey Ferguson, Trey Russell, Hayden Butcher and Hayden Walker

 

East Otago High School

A young East Otago senior A netball team did well to finish sixth in C grade at the South Island secondary schools tournament in Invercargill. Year 12 pupil Jasmine Neilson was named in the talent ID team.

The senior A hockey side competed in the South Island mixed tournament in Gore. This team had seven juniors in it, including Tash Whyte, from Maniototo Area School, who helped bring the female total up to the required number. Year 13 pupil Andrew Grubb was named the East Otago player of the tournament.

Year 11 pupil Sam Church has just returned from competing in the Transtasman Rodeo Challenge in Australia. Sam competed in the saddle bronc, placing third, second and first in consecutive rodeos.

 

Logan Park High School

At the national indoor bowls tournament in Wellington, Jonty Horwell won the New Zealand junior singles title. In the basketball tournament in Dunedin, Jaren Roy scored 43 points in one game against Buller High School.

In Blenheim, the first XI hockey team played six games, with some good wins. George Vella-King was named best player. Ben Major and Jacob Duffy gave strong performances in the Otago under-15 development team.

In badminton, Punn Ruayruen has been selected for the Otago team.

 

Otago Girls' High School

The ''Sweeping Beauties'' claimed the gold medal at the South Island secondary schools curling championships in Dunedin. Third place went to the Otago Girls' team ''Game of Stones''.

Abbey Reid and Anya Kardailsky played for the Dunedin Ice Queens ice hockey team during tournament week. The football team made the final of the competition in Dunedin but lost 1-0 to Southland Girls'. The hockey girls lost 3-2 to St Peter's College in the final of the Jenny McDonald tournament in Ashburton and have qualified to go up a grade next year.

The basketball team finished seventh of 19 teams at the South Island secondary school premiership in Nelson to qualify for the national championships.

The senior netball team team maintained its position as the third-top Otago team and retained its respectable position in A grade at the South Island tournament in Invercargill.

Karley Wilden-Palms was first in the women's single scull in the recent Oreti River bridge to bridge long-distance rowing race, beating all other school and club rowers. Juliette Lequeux was in the fastest quad with a mixed crew and second overall.

 

Maniototo Area School

At the South Island secondary schools curling championships in Dunedin, the boys (Simon Neilson, Josh Whyte, Matthew Neilson and Ben Smith) won gold and the girls (Holly Thompson, Jessica Smith, Courtney Smith, Natasha Whyte and Ashleigh Smith) claimed silver. The second boys team of Reuben Pyle, Dylan Boulton-Voice, Anton Hood and Emmett Dowling also curled well.

At the South Island under-15 rugby tournament in Queenstown, Reuben Pyle and Liam Harrington were part of the Dunstan team that finished third overall. Thomas Howell and Keagan Mulholland have been playing for the Otago Country under-15 rugby team and have had wins over North Otago and Mid Canterbury.

Candy Ferdinands, Courtney Smith and Lakita Taylor played for Mackenzie College at the South Island netball tournament in Invercargill. Ashleigh Smith went as an umpire and refereed the fifth-sixth playoff.

 

Roxburgh Area School

The netball team competed at the South Island schools tournament in Invercargill, winning its first few games and achieving its goal of reaching the top 16 of B grade by qualifying second in its pool. With a young team and some challenging games in the middle section of the tournament, the team placed 14th overall. This completed a great season, with the team finishing fifth in the Central Otago premier competition.

Eight pupils competed in the Otago secondary schools duathlon. In rugby, Jonty McKinel represented the Otago Country under-16 team, Jordan Dance made the Otago Country under-14 team, and Zoe Moore is in the Otago secondary schoolgirls team.
