Balclutha's Catholic parishioners are gearing up to celebrate
the legacy of soon-to-be-saint Mary MacKillop, helper of
disadvantaged families in rural communities more than 100
years ago.
Knox Church stands solid and seemingly unchangeable, a
striking landmark on George St, but the congregation has seen
many developments in the church's 150-year history. Charmian

theme for Richard Huber's play written to celebrate Knox
Church's 150th anniversary.
Knox Church has stood proudly in George St for almost 125
years, its 50m spire still soaring over surrounding
buildings. However, the magnificent edifice had a rocky
start.
Vandals shattered part of a stained glass window by artist
Marc Chagall as they broke into the cathedral in the eastern
city of Metz, Culture Ministry officials said.
Similarities between the building of the Pukehiki Church on
the Otago Peninsula and the Awatea St stadium were noted by
Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin at celebrations to mark the church's
140th ''birthday'' yesterday.
Milton's Presbyterian Church could shut its doors within two
months - and may even be demolished - as the parish struggles
to pay the rising costs of maintaining the 119-year-old
building.
