A small population of robins in the Silver Peaks survived a
1080 drop and even flourished due to the poison killing its
predators, a University of Otago study has found.
The "miracle" kiwi was successfully hatched on Saturday
afternoon, but the Queenstown Kiwi Birdlife Park team say
they are remaining "cautiously optimistic" until the
incubation process is complete.
Born and bred Otago residents may not realise how
lucky they are to have so many wildlife treasures right on
their doorstep, Department of Conservation Coastal Otago
programme manager biodiversity assets David Agnew says.
When considering the history of gardening in this
country, most people start with the major wave of European
migration and what it has done to our landscape.
In the second week of April, 25 South Island robins from
Douglas fir plantations on the flanks of the Silverpeaks were
liberated at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary - another milestone
for the project, as Neville Peat reports.
