Northland to Waitomo, including Bay of Plenty and central high country: Long fine spells and isolated showers in the west.

Gisborne and Hawkes Bay: Mostly fine, apart from a few coastal showers.

Taranaki to Wellington: Cloudy periods with a few showers.

Nelson and Buller: A few showers.

Westland and Fiordland: Showers, easing this afternoon and clearing at night.

Marlborough, Canterbury and eastern Otago: Showers for inland Marlborough retreating to the Sounds this morning. Areas of rain and low cloud from the Kaikoura Coast down to eastern Otago.

The remainder of Otago and Southland: Generally cloudy with patchy drizzle, especially about Foveaux Strait.

Chatham Islands: Showers and southwest gales, both easing.

New Zealand extended short-range forecast to midnight Thursday

Tuesday: Rain or showers for most places, but only the odd shower from Wanganui to Horowhenua Kapiti Coast, and also Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.

Wednesday: Rain or showers, but becoming fine in the west of the South Island.

Thursday: Rain or showers in most places, but mainly fine in the west of the South Island.

Friday: Becoming fine in most places, but still some rain for the east of the North Island, and a few showers in the Far South.

Chatham Islands: Cloudy periods on Tuesday and Wednesday, with northeasterlies strengthening. Rain developing on Thursday, and winds changing strong southerly.
