Earthquake rattles Greece

The Athens Geodynamic Institute says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5 has hit western Greece. Authorities say there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake struck at 8:02 a.m. (1702 NZT) on Wednesday with an epicenter beneath the seabed southeast of the Ionian island of Kefalonia and 300km west of the capital, Athens.

The US Geological Survey is giving a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 for the earthquake. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center gave a magnitude of 5. Measurements of the severity of a quake by different institutes often vary in the initial hours and days.

Greece is one of the world's most seismologically active countries, but most quakes are relatively small and do not cause injuries.
