Two dry toasts, a glass of iced water and the rumour mill is in overdrive - is a royal baby on the way?

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge decided to forgo the champagne when they met paralympic athletes at the British High Commissioner's residence in Singapore last night.

Catherine, more popularly known as Kate, could not have looked more svelte in a floating dress by Canadian born designer Erdem, but it was noted that for the second night running she only drank water.

It followed a candid revelation from the heir to throne earlier in the day when asked by a young fan how large a family he would like to have.

"He said he was thinking about having two," said 17-year-old Corine Ackermann.

Talk of babies first swirled in the media pack after Kate elected to drink water during two toasts at a state banquet in Singapore on Tuesday night while her husband enjoyed a glass of red.

The couple's representatives told reporters not to read too much into her teetotalling ways but the fact remains that after their lavish wedding 18 months ago, there's only one thing on the public's mind.

Eileen Seow, 76, tentatively handed the duchess a children's book by her son David Seow called Blow A Kiss during a royal tour of Singapore's Gardens on the Bay.

"My son gave a copy to Celine Dion and she had a baby!" she told reporters afterwards.

Tongues are wagging in deep anticipation of the biggest announcement of the year and all eyes will be on the duchess in Kuala Lumpur tonight when she attends a glamorous dinner hosted by Malaysia's King - His Majesty The Agong - in the Istana Negara palace.

There has been much speculation about whether Kate will wear one of Queen's tiaras to complete her look for the night but the media pack, now bump stalkers, will be more interested in what she has in her glass.
