Medicinal cannabis report due in Tasmania

A parliamentary committee in Tasmania will table its interim report into the legalisation of medicinal cannabis.

A hot topic in the island state, there has been much debate about whether the plant should be permitted in controlled crops.

An inquiry chaired by Independent Upper House MLC Ruth Forrest has heard evidence and received submissions and will give an indication of its findings.

The state Liberal government said in its submission that it supports the potential use of medicinal cannabis, but it must be subject to an evidence-based approach and strong regulatory frameworks.

In July the government rejected a bid for a clinical cannabis trial in the state, citing raising health and security concerns.
