| The two different generations of airliners seen together as an Air New Zealand Boeing 737-300 takes off on Monday morning, shortly before our flight. DC-3s had formed the backbone of domestic travel with NAC when replaced by Viscounts in 1958, which in turn were superseded a decade later by the introduction of the 737. The DC-3’s however, lasted in NAC service through until the early 1970s to smaller provincial airports.
Apologies for the head in the view, but not a shot I could repeat… |
As one of the winners of the ODT win a ride in the DC-3, I
felt it appropriate to show some pics of the flight (which
was delayed by one day due to drizzly misty weather of
Sunday).
The 30 odd minute flight took off towards Taieri Mouth, flew
up alongside the coast, taking in Tunnel Beach, heading over
St Clair and South Dunedin, up the east side of the
peninsula, with a flow flypast of Larnach Castle. Harbour
Cone was a turning point as we then crossed to the other
side, over Port Chalmers and Sawyers Bay, before continuing
up to the city and making two circuits of the central city
before heading back to Momona.
It was a great little flight, and in my view, this sort of
thing as a regular fixture in Dunedin would be a great
tourist asset, with the variety of scenery abound in
whichever direction chosen.
Thanks both to ODT and the friendly crew of Southern DC-3
Trust.
