Two critical after motorway crash

A car on the wrong side of the Auckland southern motorway collided head-on with another vehicle, leaving two people with critical injuries.

The car got on the Mt Wellington off-ramp around 12:40am and headed south on the wrong side of the motorway for some distance.

The car collided head-on with a car travelling north near the East Tamaki motorway on-ramp.

Both drivers were critically injured and taken to Middlemore Hospital by ambulance.

The motorway was closed following the crash until 4am.

Police are investigating the crash and encourage anyone who saw the crash to come forward.
