For some time past the committee of the Social Work Department of the local Young Men's Christian Association has been busily engaged in arranging a series of fortnightly social gatherings for men.

These are to be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, and the opening one, held last evening, quite fulfilled the expectations of those concerned in the management.

During the past week or two an enthusiastic band of members of the Social Committee has been making a systematic canvass of the many boarding-houses in the city, and wherever they went the young men were well received and greatly encouraged by the evidences of interest in the work.

Last night there were present representatives of numerous boarding-houses, and it is expected that there will be many more present as this feature of the work of the association becomes better known.

The rooms presented a warm and busy appearance, all of those present being intently engaged in some indoor amusement.

Perhaps the most popular games indulged in were carpet bowls and ping-pong, while scallywag, quoits, draughts, chess, and skittles also afforded a good deal of amusement.

• The Tuapeka County Council, in compliance with a request from the New Zealand Farmers' Union, has written to the provincial secretary agreeing to donate 20 towards the cost of importing little owls to assist in keeping down small birds.

The Maniototo County Council has also replied to the union's communication on the matter, asking for information in regard to the cost of importing the owls, and a reply has been sent that the cost will be about 1 per owl landed in Dunedin.

The little owl does its work in hedges and trees at night, when sparrows and other small birds become an easy prey, bunches of feathers next morning bearing testimony in each locality to the useful work for the farmer done by these industrious little workers. - ODT, 16.7.1908.
