Two lady members of the Lakes Princess Concert Party had an exciting experience on Saturday morning (says the Lake County Press).

Leaving Arrow about 8 o'clock they went for a walk on the Macetown road, and at a point some distance above Cooper's terrace they left the track and in order to obtain a better view of a small waterfall they commenced to climb a precipitous rocky face.

They had reached a height of about 50ft above the track when one of them slipped, but fortunately found a footing on a small ledge of rock. She was unable to proceed either up or down, and for upwards of an hour she was in a very perilous position.

After waiting for some time in the hope of some person coming along the track, her companion went for assistance, and two men who were working some distance away quickly arrived on the scene.

They found that the unfortunate young lady could not be rescued without the aid of a rope, and a further delay occurred while one was being procured.

In the meantime another man had gone to the assistance of the lady, and when the rope arrived she was lowered to terra firma without much difficulty.

Although the lady had been standing on a ledge of rock about four inches in width for upwards of an hour she retained her presence of mind throughout, otherwise a serious accident would have been chronicled.

• At the close of the ordinary business of the Port Chalmers Borough Council last evening a ceremony of a rather unique nature took place.

It took the form of the presentation of a handsome miniature silver cradle to the Mayor (Mr T. Scollay) in honour of the fact that a son had been born to him during his term as Mayor.

Mr D. M. Mawson presided, and the formal presentation was made by Cr Fail, the senior councillor, in the course of a neat speech. Several other councillors made short congratulatory speeches appropriate to the occasion, and all wished Mr and Mrs Scollay, and especially ''Master'' Scollay, long life and every prosperity and happiness. The Mayor responded in a suitable manner.

• An unusual incident was witnessed from Combe Hay in the early hours of Tuesday morning (says the Bruce Herald), when, fanned by a boisterous nor' wester, several small scrub fires burning during the previous day on the property of Mr C. R. Smith, in Glenledi district, spread out into a continuous blaze extending for several hundred acres and swept everything before it, until finally checked by the river and swampy land on the flat.

The noise of the crackling awakened people three miles away.
