• It is now four years since St Helens Maternity Hospital was opened, and during that time the nurses of the institution have had 835 cases passed through their hands - and, as one case does not always mean one birth, and twins have arrived on a number of occasions, 835 does not necessarily represent the number of babies that have been credited to the hospital.

The number of cases treated in the hospital is 745; 90 were outside cases.

Seventy-eight mothers have been back at St Helens a second time, and nine thrice.

No better testimonial to the value of the work that is being done at St Helens by Miss Holford and her able staff is needed than the fact that in only one case has there been a fatality - and that occurred over two years ago.

The scope and usefulness of the institution are increasing year by year, and lately Miss Holford has had to refuse a number of applications for admittance.

Possession of a seven-roomed cottage situated next door to the hospital has, however, lately been acquired, and, as it is proposed to use this as a home for the nursing staff, accommodation for eight additional patients will shortly be made available in the hospital itself.

The institution since it has been opened has turned out 26 certificated nurses, who are doing good work in various parts of the Dominion, and eight nurses are now being passed through the hospital every year.

• On Friday afternoon a large and happy gathering of members of the Dunedin and Suburban Prayer Circles met in the hall of the YWCA to say good-bye to Miss Scott on the occasion of her departure for India as a missionary of the Ramabai Mukti Mission.

Mrs James Fulton presided over a full meeting, and spoke earnestly of the need for more workers amongst the millions of India. and of the call for European helpers in the homes and in the Gospel work which has its centre at Mukti.

It was announced that most of the money necessary for Miss Scott's travelling expenses had come to hand within the last fortnight, and at the close of the meeting contributions from those present not only made up the balance, but left a few pounds in hand.

After praise and prayer Mrs Don presented Miss Scott with a handsome handbag.

Miss Scott feelingly responded.
