Fatal crash driver faces two charges

The 23-year-old driver of a car involved in a head-on smash, which resulted in the death of his passenger, south of the Lindis Pass summit last week, has been charged.

Dunedin police said yesterday the Australian man was to appear in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow on two charges - careless driving causing death and careless driving causing injury.

A passenger in his car, Peter Hoang (23), of Sydney, was killed in the head-on collision on the Omarama-Lindis Pass Rd, just after noon on Thursday.

The driver was flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries, but was discharged this week.

The driver and passenger in the other vehicle involved, a 4WD, were also flow to Dunedin Hospital.

The passenger, Rebecca Guest, of Dunedin, who was pregnant, had broken bones and was later admitted to the Queen Mary Maternity Centre, but was discharged from hospital this week.

Her husband, Sam, who was driving the 4WD, was discharged earlier.
