Paddleboarder wins title

Wanaka athletes dominated the top awards at the Central Otago Sports Awards, presented in Cromwell last night.

Stand-up paddleboarder Annabel Anderson was named 2014 Central Otago sportsperson of the year, taking home the Bruce Grant Memorial Trophy, and multisporter Braden Currie was named sportsman of the year.

Earlier, Anderson was named senior sportswoman of the year.

Both the Wanaka athletes had a successful year competing in their respective fields.

Anderson finished 2013 unbeaten, taking her second consecutive Stand Up World Tour Championship title, as well as her

second consecutive ''double-double'' title in the Battle of the Paddle Championships for the short and long course. Currie, who only took up multisport in 2011, compiled an impressive list of results in 2013, including winning the Red Bull Wulong Mountain Quest, the Wenzhou Adventure Race in China and numerous races in New Zealand, among them the Coast to Coast.

Alexandra cyclists dominated the junior categories, with Liam Aitcheson and Sophie Williamson awarded the junior men's and women's titles respectively for the second consecutive year.

Aitcheson brought home three silver medals from the 2013 Junior World Track Cycling Championships and was also part of the New Zealand under-19 men's road development squad and the New Zealand under-19 Oceania road cycling team.

He was also nominated for the 51st Halberg Sporting Awards in the emerging talent category.

After recovering from injury in early 2013, Williamson won the New Zealand club road national senior women's title before heading to the United States and earning several top 10 placings.

She finished the year by winning a silver medal in the elite women's points race at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships and a silver medal at the UCI tier 1 World Cup event.

The Wanaka under-19 boys' rowing crew was named sports team of the year.

Comprising Jamie Bowley, James Redai, Jarrod Wellman and Nicholas Jackson, the team won the Wanaka Rowing Club's first national title at the New Zealand national rowing championships.

The national freeski coach for High Performance Sport New Zealand, Bruce Wells, of Wanaka, won the coach of the year title for his efforts as a coach to his four sons, Jossi, Byron, Beau-James and Jackson.

He coached his three eldest sons during Olympic qualifying competitions, with all qualifying for this year's Winter Olympics at Sochi, Russia. The John Fitzharris Memorial services to sport award went to Alexandra netball stalwart Margaret Bennie, who has been involved in the administration of Central Otago netball since 1981.
