Man in hospital after cyanide incident call-out

A decontamination unit was sent from Dunedin to Bannockburn yesterday in response to an incident which involved cyanide, police say.

Central Otago police were alerted to the incident about 6.15am, and were concerned for the wellbeing of a 47-year-old man as a result of information they had received.

The area around a Bannockburn Rd address was cordoned off and the man was found about 8am.

He was transported to Dunstan Hospital for further assessment.

Police, fire and St John ambulance staff who attended were decontaminated at the scene.

During the incident, Fire Service staff managed traffic in Bannockburn Rd and firefighters using splash suits and breathing apparatus entered the premises. There was no risk to residents outside the address, police said.
