Pursuit ends with crash near Cromwell

A 40-minute police pursuit through the Kawarau Gorge ended when the fleeing vehicle collided with a patrol car near Cromwell last night.

Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane, of Dunedin, said the chase began about 7.40pm when a Subaru travelling at high speed failed to stop for a police car.

The car, with two occupants, headed through the Kawarau Gorge towards Queenstown, before turning around and driving back towards Cromwell.

The chase ended just outside Cromwell when the Subaru collided with the pursuing police patrol car, resulting in damage to both vehicles and the blocking of the road for a short time, he said.

One of the officers received a minor hand injury from the activation of the patrol car's airbag, Snr Sgt Lennane said.

A 17-year-old Queenstown male was arrested and would face charges of failing to stop for police and reckless driving, Snr Sgt Lennane said.
