When Central Otago residents said they wanted to make a difference around sustainability in 2008, they formed an action group. Seven years later, Making a Difference for Central Otago is one of six Otago recipients of 2015 Conservation Week Awards this week. Clair Higginson talks to reporter Stacey Bryant about the group's achievements and goals.

What does your group do and who is involved?

MAD4CO is a sustainable living programme in Central Otago.

The programme provides information, activities and resources to encourage groups and individuals to change the way they use resources.

The activities include forums, community action, movies, field days, workshops and other events.

They usually take place in conjunction with other events such as Earth Hour, World Environment Day, Adult Learners' Week, the Thyme Festival and A&P shows.

How did it start?

MAD4CO started as a community action group in 2008 when people said they would rather be ''doing stuff'' than learning in a classroom environment.

How does the group's work benefit conservation?

By learning ourselves, identifying local and visiting experts and sharing skills, experience and passion.

What does the group get out of its work in conservation?

We try to act as the connective tissue between the certainty of the past and possibilities for a certain future. The reward is in seeing new growth and new energy and increased involvement.

What challenges does the group face and has it overcome them?

Our challenges are many and varied, from simple (not enough time, resources, people) to major (impact of climate change and invasive species). We seek advice, learn and share and take action as appropriate.

What would the group like to do in the future with conservation?

Continue and grow our collaborative action, learning ways of working and sharing.
