"New blood'' and more women on Central Otago's community boards are among the calls from members who are calling it quits.

Cromwell Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Hucklebridge will not run for re-election after five terms, totalling 15 years.

"I thought I'd move over for new blood. You can't carry on with the same old, same old.

"But it needs to be balanced with experience. That's why I decided to run again last time.''

She was proud of the way Cromwell progressed in her time on the board, she said.

"We tried to manage that progression. It was so satisfying.''

She hoped the Cromwell Memorial Hall upgrade would start during her tenure, but it was "unlikely'', she said.

Last week, three-term councillor Clair Higginson told the Otago Daily Times she would not be running for the Central Otago District Council or the Vincent Community Board, on which she is serving her fourth term.

It was time for more diversity on the boards, she said.

"We need more women, that's a clear thing.''

The boards also needed more cultural diversity and a balance of members from both town and rural settings, she said.

It was a "privilege'' being an elected member, she said.

"I'm a strong believer in community participation and involvement. The council works really hard, but it can't do everything by itself.''

As board chairwoman she also chairs the Alexandra Blossom Festival, but said she "probably won't'' have much involvement after her departure.

Cromwell board member Tom Pinckney said he would leave after an "enjoyable'' term on the board because of family commitments.

Cromwell board members Neil Gillespie, Nigel McKinlay and Shirley Calvert said they would run for the council, which would probably lead to their reappointment to the board. Other Cromwell board members Glen Christiansen and Gordon Stewart said they were undecided.

Of Vincent Community Board members, Barry Hambleton said he would run for re-election and Brian Fitzgerald said he was likely to run, while Barrie Wills, Malcolm Topliss, James Armstrong and Claire Goudie said they were undecided.

Maniototo Community Board members Mark Harris, Stu Duncan and Sue Evans said they would probably stand again, while Sue Umbers and Robert Hazlett were undecided.

The Teviot Valley Community Board could remain the same, members Raymond Gunn, Cliff Parker, Russell Read, Jenna Stevens and Stephen Jeffery all having said they would run or were likely to.
