Steady progress is being made over a proposal to relocate a war memorial in Main Rd, Waikouaiti, in consultation with the Waikouaiti RSA.

That comment came from Waikouaiti Coast Community Board chairman Gerard Collings after the matter was considered during this week's board meeting at the Civic Centre, Dunedin.

The board had asked staff to investigate the feasibility of relocating the memorial.

Staff and contractors had discussed the matter with a Waikouaiti RSA representative on May 14, a parks and cemeteries management update report tabled at the meeting said.

Relocating the memorial was estimated to cost about $143,000.

Obtaining this estimate would allow the RSA to consider if it wished to pursue the proposal further, the report noted.

Mr Collings said in an interview he would meet representatives of the RSA to discuss the situation.

Government funding could be available to help with the relocation project, in association with World War 1 commemoration activities linked to Anzac Day next year, and it was hoped the move could be undertaken before then.

The Waikouaiti RSA had earlier suggested moving the memorial from the north end of the township.

The township centre had already been relocated to the south, and the proposed memorial move, to a public park, near the East Otago Events Centre, would bring it back closer to the centre.

Moving the monument would have also have other benefits, including reducing accidental damage arising from contact with vehicles over the years, and improving traffic visibility at the intersection where the memorial was now, he said.
