"It's everything you'd expect of a racing sports car - fast, noisy and fun," Mr Tempero said yesterday.
It was originally built for Christchurch enthusiast Richard Abbott, who wanted something "a little special".
Halfway through the project, Mr Tempero was approached by some old contacts who asked if it was for sale. They put a hefty price tag on it and it sold.
It has since been sold again, to a car dealer in Arizona, in the United States, for an undisclosed sum.
Four other dealers were now interested in purchasing it.
When contacted yesterday, Mr Abbott said he had planned to race the car and he was not really interested in selling it, until he was approached.
He said the Ferrari was a "beautifully reconstructed machine".
Only three 330 P4s and one 330 P3/4 were built by Ferrari, as competition sports cars, in 1967. One sold recently for $US7.5 million ($NZ11 million), Mr Tempero said.
Built to take on the Ford GT40, the Ferraris won the World Sports Car Championship in 1967.
Mr Tempero, who started with a 4.9-litre Ferrari V12 motor, front suspension and rear uprights, said it was a difficult and time-consuming car to build. "It's so detailed ... nothing on it is easy to make."
Work started about 18 months ago and it was completed yesterday morning. It will leave Oamaru within the next fortnight.
"As a showpiece, you couldn't build a better car to show off your skills. It's a car that everyone likes ... if they're into cars."
It was not hard to part with the car, as he had plenty of other projects to work on, including several other Ferraris.
