Cameras installed at traffic lights

Motorists running red and amber lights in Oamaru this month run the risk of being caught on police video.

Video cameras have been used to film intersections in Auckland and other centres and now, for the first time, will be used in Oamaru.

Yesterday, Senior Constable Alex Wynne said Oamaru had problems with people running the town's traffic lights, which were installed last year.

Police will be using the camera for the next several weeks, focusing on motorists running red and amber lights, failing to indicate, using wrong lanes and not wearing seat belts.

If people were caught on camera running a red light, the number plate would be traced and a request sent to the owner saying they had 14 days to provide the name and address of the driver. A $150 infringement notice would then be issued.
