From superheroes to lions, skeletons to Queen Victoria, there were a wide variety of masks featured at Oamaru's midwinter masquerade on Saturday night.

The town's 11th annual masquerade left Smiths Store about 6.30pm and made its way to Oamaru Harbour, where hot soup awaited.

It was a colourful spectacle on a dark winter's night, with many carrying lanterns featuring artist Donna Demente's signature faces.

Some of the masks had been made, under the guidance of Ms Demente, at workshops earlier in the week.
