Teschemakers altar mediation date set

Mediation for the parties involved in the controversy over the future of the Teschemakers chapel altar will be held on December 16.

It will be held in Oamaru, facilitated by an environment commissioner, and is not open to the public or the media.

The marble altar was to have been removed from the chapel in August and transferred to the Holy Name Church in Dunedin.

In a last-minute attempt to halt its removal, Susie Scott successfully applied for an interim enforcement order from the Environment Court, which meant work could not start and resource consent must be obtained from the Waitaki District Council to remove and transfer it.

Fr Mark Chamberlain, of Holy Name Parish, then filed an application with the court to set aside the order.

The altar was given to the Holy Name Parish by the Dominican Sisters, who own the contents of the chapel.
