Electronic signs are to be installed on State Highway 1 near
Palmerston, to advise motorists of winter road conditions.
Many travellers heading south through Palmerston during this
month's snowstorm asked local people about road conditions,
prompting one business owner to suggest the New Zealand
Transport Agency (NZTA) install signs.
NZTA coastal Otago area manager Roger Bailey said the agency
was applying for funding for the signs. He proposed an
"electronic variable message system" which had proved
successful on SH85, from Palmerston to Kyeburn, and further
south on SH1, at Waitati and Pine Hill.
Fixed signs with changeable slide panels could be used in the
interim.
