Upgrades to facilities and the access road to the Awakino Skifield near Kurow have been completed in time for the winter ski season, despite volunteer workers from the Waitaki Ski Club having to battle early snow.

Four culverts have been installed on the access road, the road to the ski lodge has been reshaped and regravelled and the lodge has been revamped.

Ski club secretary David Campbell said the project had been a challenge, with several heavy-duty machines breaking down.

Mr Campbell said despite the setbacks, the works had been completed in time for the 2012 ski season, expected to start during the July school holidays.

"Visitors to the skifield this season will experience a smoother and safer journey on the skifield road and a more comfortable lodge.

"The main tow will also be upgraded to avoid disruptions caused by the old rope breaking."
