October opening hoped for centre

Omarama hopes to open its redeveloped community centre in October, ending more than six months of work at a cost of about $730,000.

Work started in April to turn the World War 2 memorial hall into a modern, multipurpose community centre, a project first mooted in 2009, followed by fundraising.

Omarama Inc fundraiser and treasurer Glenys Dawson said outside concrete had been poured and the building had a new roof.

Electricians and plumbers were fitting out the building last week, the new stage floor being laid and old windows being knocked out to be replaced by double glazing, including doors.

A large number of the old Oamaru stone blocks removed for extensions had been retained for landscaping, she said.

Paint colours, carpet, lino folding door finishes and other furnishings had been chosen, and the commercial kitchen and its appliances planned.

Some booking inquiries had already been received.

As part of the decor, panels of Omarama's history would be on display. People who had old photographs, maps or other interesting pieces about the town's early days were asked to contact Omarama Inc.

The upgraded community centre will include a gymnasium and a 50sq m extension to house a Plunket and meeting room, and a medical consultation facility.

It will have broadband internet and a library and provide a headquarters in civil defence emergencies. The kitchen will be moved, plumbing, windows and wiring upgraded and the building re-lined.
